Kate Just, REQUILT
Bundanon Trust, NSW, Sarah Scout, VIC 2025

RE/ QUILT was produced on a weeklong residency at Bundanon Trust in Illaroo, New South Wales. The residency offered an opportunity to experiment with applique sewing and quilting techniques and to meditate on the political power of craft and hand sewing.

The prefix re-, which means "back" or "again," appears in hundreds of English vocabulary words, including the words pictured on this quilt including RECLAIM/REIMAGINE/RESIST/ REPAIR.

Constructed from old clothes, aprons, tea towels and a found floral king bed coverlet sourced in op shops and my own clothes, the hand sewn RE/Quilt explores the parallel connections between contemporary quilting and movements for social and political change. Both quilting / textile practices and social change movements can express personal and political views, create community solidarity, resist forms of oppression, repair broken systems or materials, reimagine and reform old structures and remember or memorialise the past to connect to what matters now.
